Al Sale is a newcomer to Gozo’s dining scene and is the first restaurant of chef-patron Christopher Pace who has spent the past fifteen years in the kitchens of other well-known restaurants on the island. Next to the church of Xaghra’s main square, this traditional building offers two indoor rooms, two covered terraces and a few street-side tables. The spaces are all intimate and warmly lit, and the friendly and efficient service of the young team further contributes to an ambience where you feel welcome to linger and take time to enjoy your meal. The staff are knowledgeable about the menu and you’ll often find Christopher front-of-house himself making suggestions on wine pairing and encouraging diners to try something new.
Al Sale’s menu is built around Christopher’s insistence on high-quality ingredients and his relationships with food producers. You’ll find a selection of fish, crustaceans and oversized spicy capers representing local flavours, plus more unusual dishes such as carpaccio of kangaroo or pasta with pulled duck ragu. Those in the know however come here for the crudo misto: raw fish, tartare, oysters, local prawns and langoustines or the house dish of Sea Bass Al Sale, cooked under a salt crust. The wine list of 120 personally selected labels from around the world is very well described, whilst all desserts are made in-house. Round off your meal by selecting one of the many liqueurs on offer, which include some unusual new varieties from local producers.
