L-Istazzjon, a family run restaurant in the old railway station, in Rabat, just below Mdina, offers genuine cooking where only wild fish and naturally fed chicken, beef and lamb can be found. Moreover, only fresh produce without preservatives is used. The premises are welcoming and warm, offering seating inside and also on a well protected terrace with an amazing view of green terraced fields, the smell of fresh grass and wild flowers and the chirping of birds and soft background jazz. The restaurant, which welcomes dogs, is spacious and the seating is comfortably spread out. While it is family oriented, it is also an ideal venue for couples or for parties and groups.
The friendly staff is professional and knowledgeable, explaining the menu, which offers platters, burgers and a meal menu. Indulge in calamari fritti, tossed in chick pea flour, herbs and mayo or a Veal Carpaccio with seared and thinly cut veal, accompanied with rucola, juicy pickled mushrooms and crostini, as a starter. Follow it up with the Braised Lamb Shank, cooked to perfection, where the meat falls off the bone, with middle eastern spices, cannellini beans and lentils, and a cassoulet made with fennel, apricots and sweet bell peppers or juicy fresh grilled tuna, with grilled vegetables, potatoes and salsa verde. The Sicilian Cantari Chardonnay, with intense aromas of exotic fruits and wild flowers, accompanies the tuna perfectly. Leave space for the freshly baked cookie with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream and Nutella.
