Set just below the Mellieħa parish church, within the outbuildings of the recently restored John Paul II Square, the Commando Restaurant presents a menu of contemporary and exquisite dishes in stately surroundings. Comfortable chairs and well-set tables spaciously occupy two arched rooms, both with access to a front terrace that overlooks the adjacent valley. Staff are very warm and welcoming, with a complete understanding of the menu and extensive wine list comprising the best local and international wineries.
The à la carte menu is selective and essentially focused on fresh, local produce prepared with choice international meats and seafood. A starter of chicken liver pate with local fig jam and toasted brioche sets the mood perfectly. Fresh homemade pasta dishes of local rabbit risotto with smoked pancetta and peas or braised beer ravioli with gorgonzola cream, broccoli and almonds demonstrate the kitchen’s unique expertise in producing fantastic flavours with stunning presentations. A variety of main courses include slow-cooked pork cheeks with cassoulet of beans and red wine jus or pan roasted lamb rump with thyme roasted heritage carrots are hearty and inviting. The dessert menu is selective, proving without a doubt that “less is more”. The hot chocolate and peanut butter fondant with milk ice-cream and crushed biscuits or the banana sticky toffee pudding with white chocolate ice cream, round off a perfect meal.
