Mezzodi Valletta is the latest of restaurants from the renowned foodie Diacono family, spearheaded by Head Chef Ryan Vella under the patronage of Chef Michael Diacono and his nephew Chris Diacono who runs the front of house operations. Ryan was previously working as Michael’s Sous Chef at Giuseppi’s Bar & Bistro, another of the family’s well established restaurants along with Rubino, where he proved to be such a formidable cook that he was entrusted with the family’s latest venture – Mezzodi Valletta.

The restaurant forms part of the luxurious Domus Zamittello Boutique Hotel and is in one of the most accessible and most charming part of the city right under the walls of the beautiful Teatru Rjal on South Street. Dining is available al fresco under the theatre where you can watch the city go by or in the fully air-conditioned and elegant interior that will make you feel transported to a palazzo off Piazza Navona.

The concept is simple – Italian done right. With a fixed menu that contains classic dishes from around Italy such as Spaghetti Chitarra Cacio e Pepe to Vitello al Limone, followed by a decadent Tiramisu, with a few local twists thrown in, such as Traditional Local Fried Rabbit and home-made Lamb stuffed Ravioli tossed in Butter & Sage. New to the Maltese dining scene is our “Cicchetti” section; the Venetian’s take on “tapas” where appetisers are sold as sharing dishes encouraging the sharing & social aspect of dining with small dishes such as Stracciatella & Caviar or Crudo di Manzo.

The idea is a menu that does not change, you will always find the dish you loved on your last visit, homing in on the concept of many international loved eateries such as Cecconi’s in London. But fear not, there is a specials board which changes daily for those that enjoy something with more of a twist, and where Ryan is allowed to show his flair in the kitchen, serving up specials such as Red Snapper Saltimbocca or Swordfish Involtini with Pecorino, Samphire & ‘Nduja or the much loved traditional sweet; slices of ice-cream made with condensed milk “Gelat Malti”.

The wine list is “short” but concise with a fantastic selection of wines from mainly Italy but also a selection from around the world, with a price range to suit all pockets.
