The Malta Chocolate Factory - Celebrating the fun of Chocolate in Malta!
WHERE’S WILLY WONKA?
Last August, the Malta Chocolate Factory opened its doors to locals and visitors alike – a artisan, hand-made chocolate factory with the aim of starting a chocolate tradition with a Maltese touch.
Nine out of every ten persons love to eat chocolate, with estimates showing that the Maltese consume an yearly average of seven kilograms of chocolate. Inspired by his passion for chocolate and Malta, proprietor Neil Hitchcock said: “the idea came because we thought there wasn’t anything here at the moment that celebrated the fun of chocolate on the Maltese islands and the Maltese islands has a rich history of chocolate going back to the Spanish times”.
Hitchcock said that with chocolate imported from Belgium, he adds Maltese typical ingredients so that the product is given a more Maltese touch. “For instance we introduced a fig truffle which is from local fig and we are also have a Cyrus truffle from local lemons”. Chocolate covered honeycomb, licorice, peanut brittle and apricots along with fruit and nut chocolate, chilli chocolate (a real taste sensation), hazelnut chocolates and salted peanut dark chocolate are just a small number of their creative chocolate recipes.
At the factory, the chocolates can be seen being manufactured by award-winning chocolatier David Pulis through their viewing window, while sitting in their warm, comfortable café, served with a range of hot and cold chocolate drinks with scrumptious pastries and cakes and delicious chocolate fountain treats.
