La Vela is a hidden jewel on the water’s edge of the Msida Marina. With an interior based on white wood, white linen and silver and gold touches, the place feels clean and pure. The back and outdoor area overlook the Marina. Yachts, gently bobbing, make for a quasi-hypnotic, blissful effect while you dine. Michelle and her team are fantastic hosts and very finely attuned to the palates of their patrons.
La Vela shines brightest when it comes to the bounty of the sea with an impressive wine list to complement it. For each dish, seasoning and garnish are minimal, intensifying every particle of flavour locked within its ingredients. The famous antipasto di pesce crudo e cotto is a must-have with three, five and seven different types of seafood is available whilst the spaghetti ricci is a specialty of the house. Choose your catch from their fresh fish display overflowing with John Dory, Dorado, Trill, Seabass (great “al sale”) and possibly even a live crab – all freshly caught and subject to the whims and generosity of the sea. For those who prefer beef, the Aberdeen Angus fillet and rib-eye never fail to please. For dessert, the cannolo scomposto with fresh ricotta presents the perfect interplay between crunchy, smooth and incredibly tasty.
