The journey to Il-Ħorża takes you on a quest to the outer reaches of Città Valletta – to environs you may not have trodden before, and to the Lower Barrakka Gardens, with expansive and transcending views over the sea. A stroll after lunch or dinner is highly recommended, to see the sea and to wander the ancient alleyways and paths that embed Il-Ħorża in an urban maze. Upon entry, you are immediately drawn into an enclave that is intimate and exciting – what was once a sixteenth century town house.

The far end of the small restaurant grabs your attention with a rich ‘trompe l’oeil’, featuring a cloak of red drapery, overlaid with gold mirrors and paintings. Starters include paccheri, with an aromatic pork ragoût and soft herbs, and home cured salmon with compressed cucumber, cucumber dressing, pickled radish and crumbled feta. Mains include roasted cutlet of milk fed veal cooked in sage butter served with cauliflower and veal jus, the Black Angus sirloin of beef with local mushrooms and Madeira jus, or the crispy local pork belly served with sautéed pancetta and cabbage in a pork jus. For dessert, try the white chocolate panna cotta served with honey muesli and caramel purée, or the dark chocolate mousse served with crumble, milk chocolate ganache and pear sorbet.
